1. Who we are

Drive Round App ("we", "us", "our") is a UK-based service that helps learner drivers, approved driving instructors (ADIs), and new drivers track progress and prepare for the DVSA practical driving test. We operate at driveround.co.uk.

We are the data controller for personal information collected through this website and mobile application. For any privacy enquiries, contact us at privacy@driveround.co.uk.

2. What data we collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

  • Account information: name, email address, phone number, and user role (learner, ADI, or new driver).
  • Driving lesson data: GPS coordinates, speed data, route recordings, and timestamps captured during lessons.
  • Audio recordings: in-lesson audio collected with your explicit consent for AI transcription and feedback.
  • Progress data: lesson notes, skill assessments, test date, and feedback from your instructor.
  • Device data: device type, operating system, app version, and crash logs for technical support.
  • Usage data: features accessed, session duration, and in-app interactions for product improvement.

3. Legal basis for processing

We process your data under the following UK GDPR lawful bases:

  • Contract: to provide the service you signed up for.
  • Consent: for audio recording and AI analysis — you can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests: to improve the app, detect fraud, and ensure security.
  • Legal obligation: where required by UK law.

4. How we use your data

  • Provide and personalise the Drive Round App experience.
  • Generate AI-powered lesson summaries and progress reports.
  • Enable instructors and learners to share lesson notes and routes.
  • Send lesson reminders and test date notifications (with your permission).
  • Improve our AI models and product features (anonymised data only).
  • Comply with legal obligations.

5. Data sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in the following circumstances:

  • Your instructor or learner: lesson notes and progress data shared only between linked instructor–learner pairs.
  • Service providers: cloud hosting (Firebase/Google), analytics, and AI processing partners — all under data processing agreements.
  • Legal requirements: if required by law, court order, or to protect safety.

6. Data retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Lesson recordings and GPS data are retained for 12 months by default, after which they are automatically deleted unless you choose to keep them. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the app settings.

7. Your rights under UK GDPR

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectify inaccurate data.
  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Restrict or object to processing.
  • Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time for consent-based processing.

To exercise any of these rights, contact privacy@driveround.co.uk. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

8. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest, and access controls. Audio and GPS data is processed on-device where possible to minimise data transfer.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or in-app notification. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
